法官是正义的使者，是公平的化身。他社会地位崇高，倍受人们的尊重和敬仰，独立裁判，生杀予夺，不怒自威；他集渊博的学识、敏锐的思维、清醒的头脑于一身，一生致力于维护法律的公正和威严；最重要的是他具有各行各业中最崇高的职业道德，品行高洁，襟怀坦荡，弘扬美德，匡扶正义，以一身浩然正气傲然挺立在人生潮头，象泰山绝顶令人仰止。

然而冷静衡量理想和现实之间的距离，看一看我们身边无数个普普通通、勤恳工作着的法官们，不能不感受到“崇高”二字的沉重。市场经济的蓬勃发展，给人们的思想观念带来了巨大的冲击，市场经济的多元性、开放性、利益性，也产生了道德观的众多选择。法官不是生活在真空之中，我们无时无刻不在面对着高贵和庸俗的碰撞，清贫和金钱的较量，寂寞和繁华的斗争：

一边是我们勤勉辛苦、加班加点的工作，

一边是不法商人投机偷税，大发横财；

一边是我们舍身求法、为民解忧的万丈豪情，

一边是无法逃避的行政干预、人情困扰、执行难、地方保护各种顽疾；

一边是我们每月平均千元以下的微薄的工资，与此相对应的穷尽半生积蓄购置的两居室、三居室，

一边是同样通晓法律的知名律师，代理一次大标的诉讼即可获得的数万薪酬，还有他们与此相对应的坐落在绿林芳草间，出入均为高级轿车的所谓高尚住宅区。

当民主和法制的建设尚未完全跟上社会变迁的脚步，当我们的社会对奉献和高尚只限于提倡却没有给予有力的保护和慷慨的回报，对卑劣的言行只限于指责却没有给予迎头的痛击和严厉的惩罚，那么卑劣就得到了纵容而显得务实，道德就受到了冷落而越发飘渺。我们的优秀法官们，其法律功底和敏捷的才思比那些知名律师有过之而无不及，为什么不去做出现实的选择，是什么一种精神力量让法官无怨无悔地承担着这么沉重的社会良知，执着地把守道德的高地？

我的回答是：是的，是有一种精神力量支持着我们，让我们必须承担，必须把守，必须安于一生的清贫，这份清贫甚至要延续到我们的后代。我们必须如此，因为我们是人民的法官，道德和良知的守护者，社会正义的最后一道防线。高尚的道德，对于我们来说不仅仅是一种个人美德，更是我们义不容辞的社会责任。

各行各业都有自己的职业道德，医生有医德，教师有师德，律师有执业纪律，企业有竞争准则。但是有些行业与社会公众切身利益关系不大，即使从业人员素质很差，公众也能容忍，期待他们慢慢改正。法官却不同，我们每天所接触的是一类特殊又敏感的人群，我们永远处在各种利益和冲突的尖锐的纠结点。以我们现在的国情，普通老百姓绝对不会因为楼下放音响时间太长了，睡不好觉就毫不犹豫地起诉他；老百姓不到万不得已是不愿意撕破脸皮闹到法院来的。很多人来到法院时早已经心灰意冷，怨气十足，抱的是“不蒸馒头争口气，这官司我非赢不可”的激进态度，对诉讼结果的强烈关注使他们对法官的言行十分敏感，只要法官实体或程序上处理得稍有偏差，或者仅仅是言辞上有冷漠和厌烦，当事人就会认为法官不公正。社会公众对法官的职业道德要求之高，远远超过了普通的道德标准。难怪有人说：如果社会上追求完人的话，那么法官就是大家心目中的完人。

the world is very different now. for man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. and yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe -- the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state，but from the hand of god.

we dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. let the word go forth from this time and place，to friend and foe alike，that the torch has been passed to a new generation of americans -- born in this century，tempered by war，disciplined by a hard and bitter peace，proud of our ancient heritage，and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed，and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.
